Four Ways to Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is one of those words that everybody uses now-a-days, but nobody knows what it actually means. To sum it up for you, mindfulness means to be aware. Aware of your thoughts. Aware of your reaction. Aware of your behavior patterns, and so on. When we become mindful, our actions become aligned with our intentions. We thus become more content with the decisions we make in life and the endeavors we choose to pursue. Here are four ways that you can practice mindfulness in your daily life:
1.Meditate
There’s no big secret on how to meditate. Go to a quiet place. Find a comfortable seated position. Personally, I like to sit up on either a yoga block or meditation cushion (feel free to use a pillow as well!). Set a timer on your phone for 5 minutes. Close your eyes. And just breathe.
2. Sleep 8 hours a day.
Ever been sitting at your desk at work and find yourself struggling to keep your eyes open? You need more sleep. There is no way for our minds to be aware if they are sleep deprived. We simply cannot think straight when we are fatigued. If you find yourself working late at night, I recommend putting a set limit on yourself. For example, commit to only working until 11 pm, and anything that you haven’t finished can wait until tomorrow.
3. Journal
The best way to find clarity in your thoughts is to write them down. Rather than writing on loose paper, buy yourself an actual small journal to write in everyday. If everyday sounds like too much, start with every week. Once you make journaling a consistent habit, you’ll be able to look back at old entries and see firsthand how you’ve grown over time.
4. Practice yoga.
